How it works · Blocking IL-6
Immune cells release IL-6

IL-6 is a chemical messenger. Overactive immune cells release it to call in more inflammation.

What it’s used for

Rheumatoid arthritis, giant cell arteritis, systemic sclerosis lung disease and some other inflammatory conditions.

How it works

It sits on the IL-6 receptor so IL-6 cannot deliver its inflammatory message.

How it’s taken

An IV infusion every 4 weeks or an injection under the skin every 1 to 2 weeks.

Side effects

Higher infection risk, raised cholesterol and liver enzymes, low white counts, and rarely bowel perforation in people with diverticulitis.

Monitoring

Blood counts, liver tests and cholesterol. Note: it suppresses CRP and fever, so infections can look milder than they are.

Good to know

Tell any doctor treating you for infection that you take an IL-6 blocker.
