How it works · Blocking IL-6
Immune cells release IL-6

IL-6 is a chemical messenger. Overactive immune cells release it to call in more inflammation.

What it’s used for

Rheumatoid arthritis and polymyalgia rheumatica.

How it works

It blocks the IL-6 receptor, cutting off one of the main inflammation signals.

How it’s taken

An injection under the skin every 2 weeks.

Side effects

Infections, low white counts, raised liver enzymes and cholesterol, and injection-site reactions.

Monitoring

Blood counts, liver tests and lipids, especially in the first months.

Good to know

Like tocilizumab, it can hide fever and lower CRP during infection.
