What it’s used for

Severe osteoporosis, multiple fractures and steroid-induced osteoporosis.

How it works

They mimic parathyroid hormone in short daily pulses, which switches on osteoblasts to build new bone.

How it’s taken

A daily injection under the skin, usually for up to 2 years.

Side effects

Dizziness when standing, leg cramps, nausea and mildly raised calcium.

Monitoring

Calcium and sometimes uric acid levels.

Good to know

After the course, a bone-protecting medicine is started so the new bone is kept.
