How it works · Blocking TNF
Immune cells release TNF

TNF is a chemical messenger. Overactive immune cells release it to call in more inflammation.

What it’s used for

Rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, axial spondyloarthritis and psoriasis.

How it works

A receptor-based protein that soaks up TNF before it reaches cells.

How it’s taken

An injection under the skin once a week.

Side effects

Injection-site reactions, upper respiratory infections and a higher risk of serious infection.

Monitoring

TB and hepatitis B screening before starting, then periodic labs.

Good to know

Unlike some TNF inhibitors, etanercept is not used for inflammatory bowel disease or uveitis.
