B cells make antibodies

B cells produce antibodies. In lupus, overactive B cells make harmful autoantibodies.

What it’s used for

Systemic lupus and lupus nephritis, added to standard therapy.

How it works

It binds BLyS (BAFF), a protein that keeps B cells alive, so overactive B cells decline.

How it’s taken

A weekly injection under the skin or an IV infusion every 4 weeks.

Side effects

Nausea, diarrhea, infections, infusion reactions and, rarely, mood changes.

Monitoring

Regular lupus labs and attention to mood.

Good to know

It can lower flare rates and help reduce steroid doses over time.
