What it is
Viruses such as parvovirus B19, hepatitis B and C, chikungunya and rubella can cause arthritis. Parvovirus, common in parents and teachers of young children, can mimic early rheumatoid arthritis.
Symptoms
Sudden pain and sometimes swelling in several small joints of both hands and wrists, often with a rash, fever or fatigue.
How it’s diagnosed
Blood tests for recent viral infection, along with tests to rule out RA or lupus. Symptoms usually settle within weeks, which itself supports the diagnosis.
Treatment
Rest, NSAIDs and time. Arthritis linked to hepatitis is managed by treating the underlying infection.
Living with it
If joint swelling lasts more than six weeks, see a rheumatologist to check for a lasting form of arthritis.
